Why Flossing Matters for Oral Health
Flossing is just as important as brushing, yet it’s one of the most commonly skipped steps in daily oral care. At Dental On Magill, we encourage patients across Adelaide to floss daily to prevent gum disease and tooth decay. These flossing tips and tricks will help you floss correctly and comfortably.
Why Flossing Is Important
Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth where toothbrushes can’t reach. Skipping flossing allows bacteria to build up, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease.
Floss Once a Day
Flossing once daily is enough to maintain healthy gums. Many people prefer flossing at night to remove debris from the day.
Use the Right Amount of Floss
Use about 40–45 cm of floss, wrapping most of it around your middle fingers and leaving a small section to work with.

Be Gentle Around the Gums
Slide the floss gently between teeth and curve it into a C-shape against the side of each tooth. Avoid snapping the floss, which can irritate gums.
Clean Below the Gumline
Gently guide the floss slightly under the gumline to remove plaque where gum disease often begins.
Try Alternatives If Needed
If traditional floss is difficult to use, floss picks, interdental brushes, or water flossers can be effective alternatives.
Be Consistent
Flossing may feel awkward at first, but daily practice makes it easier and more comfortable over time.
